The 4th Annual Brent Rice Memorial Swim of the Sound
Welcome to the Brent Rice Memorial Swim of the Sound Website. The BRMSOS is a 2.3 mile open water swim across Puget Sound, from Des Moines Beach Park to Maury Island. The swim is a fundraiser for the Brent Rice Memorial Foundation which provides scholarships for swim lessons and funding for aquatic programs.
This swim was started in 2006 by 17 year old Justin Moser, who wanted to honor his friend and mentor Brent Rice who passed away just over five years ago in a car accident. Brent Rice once did the swim himself as a personal challenge from one of his brothers. Brent Rice was local swimmer, one of the best in the state, an All-American at Mt Rainier High School and Whitworth College in Spokane, WA.
The swim will be run by volunteer lifeguards, the Des Moines Fire Department and the US Coast Guard. Swimmers who want to participate must be intermediate or advanced; although this is a fun event the sound is very treacherous. Swimmers that are interested can sign up online at Active.com. The date of the swim is Saturday August 22, 2009.
